For the last 25 years, Rafik Mankarios has been an active drummer playing in Montreal. At an
early age, anything he touched was turned into a percussion instrument. His passion began in
his early childhood and still today, music and rhythm captivate him.
Although he started playing at 4 years old on a snare drum his grandfather gave him as a gift,
his musical awakening took a serious twist later in high school. He was awarded the first chair
percussion for a grand musical event: CECM En Musique. From there on, Rafik has been
exposed to countless artistic experiences that have helped establish the foundations of his
present day solid experience.
While avidly observing and listening to master inspirational drummers like Buddy Rich,
Horacio Hernandez, Dave Weckl and many others, Rafik has benefited from the private
teaching of well-known and respected Montreal drummers: Philippe Keyser and Bernard
Primeau, who both enriched his musical learning in many ways.
After driving bands, and more particularly many Montreal's top Big Bands, in shows, concerts,
tours and recordings for more that 18 years, an opportunity to work in Switzerland led Rafik
to more extraordinary musical experiences. The year spent in Europe has greatly inspired his
taste and need for musical diversity.
Back home, Rafik is now involved in many projects, including leading his own ensemble: The
Jazz Latin Djam. Whether it's playing musicals, corporate gigs, shows, touring or recording,
Rafik implicates himself with the same professionalism every time. Being a very versatile
drummer, he is constantly seeking new challenges.
